The Witcher 4's Director Talks About Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo Running at 60 FPS on PS5

We at CD Projekt Red are collaborating with Epic Games to push open-world game design further than ever before, and we wanted to share our progress with the gaming community through The Witcher 4 Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo—a showcase of how we're bringing more life, depth, and reactivity to the Continent than ever before. This isn't gameplay of The Witcher 4, but we still wanted to incorporate CD Projekt Red's signature storytelling into the tech demo, showing our new protagonist Ciri in the midst of a dangerous monster contract. We also reveal the never-before-seen region of Kovir, a rugged land where cities are built on trade and keep a careful distance from the military conflicts that plague the rest of the north.

But the focus of this tech demo is just that—tech—and we were proud to show it live on stage, running at 60 frames per second on a PlayStation 5. The tools highlighted won't just power The Witcher 4, but will also be shared with the wider video game development community through Unreal Engine 5. The tech we're creating with Epic will benefit the entire industry, ultimately bringing a better experience to players.

Unreal Engine 5.6 Brings 60 FPS Ray Tracing to Current-Generation Hardware

Epic Games yesterday introduced Unreal Engine 5.6, a significant update designed to ensure that high-fidelity open-world projects maintain a smooth 60 frames-per-second experience on current-generation consoles, high-end PCs, and capable mobile devices by optimizing key rendering and streaming systems, Unreal Engine 5.6 addresses longstanding performance challenges. A central improvement focuses on hardware-accelerated ray tracing for global illumination. The enhanced system shifts critical processing tasks from the CPU to modern GPUs, allowing developers to create more complex lighting scenarios while preserving a locked 60 FPS frame rate. Combined with streamlined Lumen routines, environments gain richer visual detail without sacrificing performance. Content streaming also receives substantial attention. The new Fast Geometry Streaming plugin, currently in experimental mode, enables the loading of large volumes of static geometry on demand without stuttering.

At runtime, asynchronous physics state creation further smooths transitions, ensuring that expansive levels no longer cause unexpected frame drops. Unreal Engine 5.6 also introduces updated device profiles tailored for current consoles and desktop hardware. These profiles automatically adjust graphics settings to meet performance targets, thereby reducing manual configuration and enabling teams to deliver high-quality visuals at stable frame rates. Unreal Engine 5.6 powers the upcoming The Witcher 4 game, which has been demonstrated on the PlayStation 5 console, running at 60 FPS out of the box, with ray tracing. This signals that game optimizations will finally become the norm again, with more powerful hardware delivering higher FPS at higher resolutions in a beautiful, ray-traced open world.

Final The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Update To Add Console and Cross-Platform Mods

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just turned 10, and CD Projekt Red announced earlier this week that it would be celebrating the game's 10th anniversary with a set of Special Edition Xbox controllers and a slew of live events and memorabilia. Following those announcements, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that it has at least one more content update planned for The Witcher 3. The next, and seemingly the last, The Witcher 3 patch is slated to more or less unify the game's modification scene, bringing cross-platform mod support to the open-world fantasy RPG. CDPR has not confirmed an exact date for the cross-platform mod support update, stating only that it will be available "later this year."

According to a new support page detailing the cross-platform mod support, modders will now be able to publish their mods for The Witcher 3 on a platform called mod.io, which will allow players and modders to upload and download mods across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This will be the only way for consoles to access mods for The Witcher 3, however PC players will still be able to use services like Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods, if they prefer. Unlike with third-party sites, like Nexus Mods, any mods published on mod.io will need to comply with certain guidelines laid out by both the console makers, Sony and Microsoft, and the CD Projekt Red Fan Content Guidelines and User Agreement. For this reason, the mod selection available on consoles will be less expansive than what's available on PC, where restrictions are less of a concern. In a technical sense, the only restrictions modders will face when using mod.io is that any console mods that use scripts will need to be made with CDPR's REDkit mod tools. Meanwhile, texture packs and other bundles can be created using any other tools.

Sony Leadership Contemplating Price Hikes & Potential US Production Line for PS5

A month ago, Sony increased its PlayStation 5 home console prices for EMEA and ANZ regions—affecting customers in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. At the time, industry experts surmised that company leadership was considering a similar strategy for a primary market: North America. Instead of freshly implemented 25% upward hikes for certain products/packages, reports suggested a 30% climb—for the North American market. Weeks later, company leadership has discussed this hot topic. During yesterday's (projected) earnings call with investors, top brass confirmed their consideration of "passing along" additional costs to consumers—in response to a reported/anticipated 100 billion yen (~$680 million) impact from US tariffs. They outlined a stockpile of PS5 consoles; enough units have been accumulated for roughly three months of supply—unaffected by adjusted conditions, in the States.

Despite this provision, Hiroki Totoki—Sony's president/CEO—is open to exploring alternative production avenues, in the face of looming extra charges. When asked about this matter, he replied with: "hardware can of course be produced locally, I think that would be an efficient strategy. PS5 is being manufactured in many areas, whether it is going to be manufactured in the US or not—it needs to be considered going forward." In efforts to navigate a trying situation, Nintendo has juggled its geographic manufacturing footprint—recent-ish developments have shifted away from a complete reliance on Chinese facilities. Industry insiders reckon that the bulk of US-bound Switch 2 units will be Vietnamese-made. Like Sony, Nintendo's executive team has publicly disclosed thoughts about future price hikes—maybe following the launch of its much-anticipated "next-gen" hybrid console. Earlier this month, Microsoft upped modern Xbox portfolio price tags—affecting customers across the world.

Rockstar Claims GTA VI Trailer 2 "Captured Entirely" by PlayStation 5 Base Hardware

Not too long after announcing the delay of their flagship next-gen AAA+ game, Rockstar Games appeased the masses with the uploading of a bombastic second trailer—showcasing Grand Theft Auto VI's various colorful cast members, Vice City locales, and spectacular visual effects. Online debaters have picked this cinematic preview apart; many doubters reckon that teaser material (mostly) consists of pre-rendered CGI—pumped out by "pro-grade" equipment. Many observers did not pick up on a small text detail—"captured on PS5"—at the tail end of the studio's GTA VI Trailer 2. To reiterate this point, the Rockstar Games official social media account sent out a bulletin. Yesterday evening's official alert insisted that their: "Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5, comprised of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes." This tidbit is also mentioned in the trailer's YouTube description.

Earlier today, the Digital Foundry team published their (must read, or watch) technical critique of Rockstar's forthcoming magnum opus. In their (collective) professional opinion, Rockstar's claim deserves merit: "the trailer was released in 4K at 30 FPS with black bars—producing a rather odd 20:9 aspect ratio—with text at the end of the trailer confirming it was recorded on a base PS5 instead of the more powerful PS5 Pro. Internal resolution counts come out at 1440p, or 2560x1152 to be exact—that's 80 percent of 1440p on the vertical axis. The trailer seems to be using a spatial upscaler, something like AMD's first-generation FSR, with that characteristic curved look present in fine detail like distant text. This means image quality is a little soft, but makes it more believable that the game is actually running on a base PS5, bearing in mind the relatively realistic details and graphical effects elsewhere." Going back to late 2024, another highly anticipated "AAA+" title was unveiled—The Witcher 4; with an Unreal Engine 5 underpinning. At the time, CD Projekt RED hinted about this fantasy blockbuster's introductory trailer being pre-rendered by an "unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU." We later learned that this mysterious bit of hardware was a formidable GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card. Given GTA VI's (2026) "consoles first" launch, Rockstar engineers do not have the luxury of (immediately) pairing their proprietary RAGE engine with cutting-edge hardware. An elevated visual feast—on PC platforms—is expected further down the line.

Borderlands 4 State of Play Deep Dive Reveals Siren Abilities, Progression, Massive Mobility Buffs, and Overhauled Gameplay

As the Borderlands 4 release date nears, 2K Games and Gearbox have seen fit to give fans a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming looter shooter in a PlayStation State of Play Deep Dive. The video jumps straight into the action, giving us more hints about what to expect from the new vault hunters that will be the center of the story on Kairos. The presenters finally revealed the names of two of the new vault hunters: The siren is called Vex, and the soldier-class hunter is called Rafa; so far, the other two vault hunters still remain a mystery. The deep dive provided a small glimpse at what to expect from the various vault hunters, with the two mentioned above receiving the most attention throughout. Rafa is a former Tediore soldier with an experimental exo-suit able to conjure energy weapons—including some long arm-mounted blades that look lethal for melee combat—and enhance his physical attributes, while Vex features the usual siren pseudo-magical abilities that enable her to summon minions, manipulate her enemies, and buff her own abilities. We only got glimpses of the other two vault hunters in action: The burly vault hunter than has often been likened to a viking shows off an energy shield, similar to what we saw from Athena in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. As expected, he seems to be something of a close-quarters combatant. The other female vault hunter, who has comically been referred to as "pants lady" in online discussions, showed off the ability to use something similar to a Siren's phase lock ability, although that's all we have seen from her aside from what was shown of previously.

In terms of plot, the only real plot-relevant mission shown off in the deep dive occurs when the POV player is at level 24, and the vault hunters are on a mission to rescue Lilith from a fortress, where it is discovered that a villain is seemingly conducting human experiments. The planet Kairos has been ruled and seemingly kept out of danger by the Timekeeper, who used cybernetic implants and a fanatical organization called The Order to maintain order, but the whole system was thrown into disarray when Lilith teleported the moon Elpis into Kairos's orbit at the end of Borderlands 3, six years prior to the events unfolding in Borderlands 4. The disruption of the Timekeeper's order has caused an uprising in the people, resulting in many of its citizens crudely removing their cybernetic brain implants and apparently causing brain damage in the process. The State of Play deep dive also gave us some ideas of what to expect from its overhauled skill trees, weapons mods, loot mechanics, and greatly enhanced mobility options.

Borderlands 4 Release Date Switch-Up Could Hint at GTA VI Launch Date

2K Games just announced that Borderlands will launch almost two weeks earlier than expected, moving the release date from September 23 to September 12. Nothing else regarding the release seems to have changed, with even the launch trailer even remaining unchanged with the old September 23 release date still present. 2K Games and Gearbox haven't specified a reason for the release date switch-up, but it's currently theorized that the looter-shooter was moved to make space for the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Rumors and leaks previously indicated that GTA VI would launch sometime around October or November 2025, and we previously reported that game developers were already nervous about launching games within at least two weeks of the launch of GTA VI. The concern was that GTA VI would overshadow any other games that released even remotely close to it. It seems as though even a genre giant like Borderlands 4 isn't immune to this effect. Currently, the only concrete information about the GTA VI launch date is a confirmation that it will launch in "Autumn 2025," and indications are that the PC version will only arrive in early 2026. Borderlands 4, on the other hand, will have a simultaneous multi-platform launch, coming to Steam, Epic Games, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 on day one—there has been talk of a Nintendo Switch 2 port, but that release date is thus far unknown. Along with the new launch date, 2K Games has also announced that it will host a Borderlands 4 gameplay showcase on April 30 at 14:00 PT (21:00 UTC).

Sony Entertainment today announced the October 2 release date, which is slated to be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 console for the time being, alongside new special editions of the upcoming action-adventure game. The base game will cost $69.99, while the $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition will include the full digital base game, four cosmetic unlocks, and an early unlock for the Travelers Map. The Collector's Edition bundle will include an array of physical collectibles—a replica of Atsu's mask from the game, a sash, tsuba, art cards, zeni hajiki coin game and pouch, and a papercraft ginko tree—along with the same in-game items as included in the Digital Deluxe Edition. All of that comes at a whopping $249.99.

Sucker Punch also released a new trailer for Ghost of Yōtei, which reveals the villainous Yōtei Six and their brutal slaughter of Atsu's people, which serve as the motivation for her revenge story. It's unclear when Ghost of Yōtei will expand to PC and other console gaming platforms, but speculation suggests that 2027 is the earliest we will see a cross-platform launch for the Ghost of Tsushima sequel. Previous reports also indicated that there will be a Ghost of Tsushima expanded universe, with possible TV and movie spin-offs on the cards.
