Logitech Intro Signature Slim Wired Keyboard and Mouse Combo for Business

Logitech today announced Signature Slim Wired MK620 & MK625 Combo for Business, a revamped keyboard and mouse duo designed for companies and industries that require wired technology for reliability, physical security, or shared workspaces, and need to switch between PC, macOS, and ChromeOS.

It may seem the world has gone wireless, but some industries have strong reasons not to cut the cord. In financial trading floors, physical security is top of mind. In medical facilities, a low battery can slow down information input during a patient's critical condition. In schools or shared workspaces, missing keyboards and mice can bring productivity to a halt.

Microsoft to Enforce Certain USB-C Features on WHCP Certified Laptops

The Type-C USB connector has made it a lot easier—at least in theory—to connect devices, but it's not without its faults, especially as it's been hard to know what capabilities both the ports and the cables deliver. The USB-IF has solved most of the issues on the cable side with clearer markings on certified cables, but that still leaves both computers and devices as a gotcha point. Microsoft has now announced that it has a new WHCP (Windows Hardware Compatibility Program) certification program for Windows 11 laptops that guarantees certain features from a Type-C USB port. No, it doesn't mean all new Windows 11 WHCP laptops will support USB4, which is something of a letdown, but it does guarantee that all USB-C ports on new WHCP laptops will support charging of the laptop and at least DP Alt mode for one display.

As the older USB 3.x standard doesn't support many of the features of USB4, there are several limitations to laptops that lack USB4 support, beyond just data transfer speeds over USB, such as PCIe tunnelling and Thunderbolt 3 support. However, Microsoft mandates Thunderbolt 3 support on all WHCP laptops with USB4 support. USB4 equipped WHCP laptops also have to support 15 W device charging and at least a pair of 4K 60 Hz displays via DP Alt mode. Microsoft's new WHCP certification does at least remove some of the guesswork when buying a new laptop, but until all laptops support USB4, there will still be devices with limited USB Type-C ports in the market.

Prototype NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 with Four 16-Pin Connectors Pictured

What if NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5090 GPU had access to not one but four 16-pin power connectors? Not only would it draw much less power per connector, thus avoiding overheating of the connector in some cases, but the power coming into the GB202 could theoretically scale to 2,400 Watts. This is precisely what NVIDIA tested with its latest leaked GeForce RTX 5090 GPU engineering sample. Pictured below is a PCB that was destroyed after testing. Around the edges of the card, you can spot several USB headers, pin test points, and diagnostic connectors. These features are standard on development samples but are removed from retail models. On the I/O bracket, there are five display outputs, which are more than what you usually find on a gaming card. This suggests NVIDIA was testing output strength and signal quality under different loads. Since we can't see the back side of the board, it's unclear if the chip itself is from the GeForce RTX 5090 series or the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell variant. However, it is most likely a super early sample of RTX 5090 before volume production began.

China Develops HDMI Alternative: 192 Gbps Speeds and 480 W Power Delivery

A consortium of over 50 Chinese companies, including names like Huawei, Hisense, and TCL, has unveiled a domestic alternative to HDMI that offers up to 192 Gbps bandwidth and 480 W of power delivery. This new standard, the General Purpose Media Interface (GPMI), supports next-generation multimedia devices, meeting the growing demands of 8K resolution, higher refresh rates, and simplified connectivity. There are two variants available: a smaller Type-C model providing 96 Gbps and 240 W and a larger Type-B model delivering the full 192 Gbps and 480 W. Developed as a third-generation audio and video interface, GPMI addresses the limitations of older standards such as DVI and VGA while vastly outperforming HDMI 2.1's 48 Gbps and DisplayPort 2.1's 80 Gbps in data throughput. Its design enables bidirectional communication, seamlessly transmitting video, audio, data, and power over a single cable.

The standard's architecture includes a primary data link that can be split into various configurations—such as 6+2 or 1+7 channels—to adapt to different usage scenarios. In addition to its high-bandwidth data channels, GPMI features auxiliary links for device management, cable information, and a limited USB 2.0 connection. The Type-C variant, which has received approval from the USB Association, ensures compatibility with the USB-C ecosystem, helping with the integration for smart TVs and other connected devices. Primarily developed for the domestic market, GPMI also aims to reduce China's dependence on Western-controlled standards and licensing regimes.

Apple Silicon Macs Gain x86 Emulation Capability, Run x86 Windows Apps on macOS

Parallels has announced the introduction of x86 emulation support in Parallels Desktop 20.2.0 for Apple Silicon Macs. This new feature enables users to run x86-based virtual machines on their M-series Mac computers, addressing a longstanding limitation since Apple's transition to its custom Arm-based processors. The early technology preview allows users to run Windows 10, Windows 11 (with some restrictions), Windows Server 2019/2022, and various Linux distributions through a proprietary emulation engine. This development particularly benefits developers and users who need to run 32-bit Windows applications or prefer x86-64 Linux virtual machines as an alternative to Apple Rosetta-based solutions.

However, Parallels is transparent about the current limitations of this preview release. Performance is notably slow, with Windows boot times ranging from 2 to 7 minutes, and overall system responsiveness remains low. The emulation only supports 64-bit operating systems, though it can run 32-bit applications. Additionally, USB device support is not available, and users must rely on Apple's hypervisor as the Parallels hypervisor isn't compatible. Despite these constraints, the release is a crucial step forward in bridging the compatibility gap for Apple Silicon Mac users so legacy software can still be used. The feature has been implemented with the option to start virtual machines hidden in the user interface to manage expectations, as it is still imperfect.
