ASE's State-of-the-Art Semiconductor Assembly System Bolstered by AMD Processors

Often, when semiconductor companies talk about chip manufacturing, they are referring to the specific process of applying masks and etching silicon wafers that takes place in advanced foundries. While these are critical steps in chip production, they don't result in a functional processor in and of themselves. Fully processed wafers are often transferred from the foundry manufacturer to an OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) firm. There, newly built processors are mounted to underlying substrates, connected to other processors, and checked for errors.

ASE Technology Holdings is the largest OSAT in the world, with facilities in Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore. It assembles and tests electronics for semiconductor manufacturers across the planet and has collaborated with AMD to develop 2.5D interposers and other advanced packaging since 2007. But it's one thing to build parts for a customer and something altogether different to adopt that customer's hardware into your own lines of business. ASE's collective requirements run the gamut from lightweight mobile systems to data center systems with dozens to hundreds of available CPU cores.

GlobalFoundries Announces Increased $16 Billion Investment - Supporting U.S. Chip Facility Upgrades

Earlier today, GlobalFoundries announced a boosted $16 billion investment. This cash injection will further drive the expansion of current North American chip production facilities. Specifically, an extra $3 billion will be spent on supporting advanced research and development projects. The multinational corporation's leadership outlined key R&D goals: packaging innovation, silicon photonics, and next-generation gallium nitride technologies. An additional $1 billion "capital spending boost" will bolster upgrades of the firm's New York and Vermont foundry sites. AMD, Apple, General Motors, NXP Semiconductors, Qualcomm and SpaceX were listed as notable partners—collectively, they are engaged in elevating the domestic semiconductor industry.

Top brass did not detail a firm upgrade timeline, but Tim Breen—the GlobalFoundries CEO—provided a short explanation (via Reuters): "the reason we're not sort of being super clear about exactly what's spent by when is because obviously some of this is demand-driven. We see a very strong demand, but it takes time to convert (demand) into specific ramps and project timing. And what you don't want to do is shoot too far ahead or fall too far behind." As part of the original $12 billion outlay, GlobalFoundries revealed intentions for its Malta, New York site. Around mid-January (2025), the company unveiled blueprints for an advanced packaging and photonics center—destined for construction at their Saratoga County-based chip manufacturing hub. GlobalFoundries is best known for its decidedly mature product portfolio—around late March/early April, the firm's executive team denied that they were considering a merger with UMC. This speculative deal could lead to a greater international footprint of foundries; mostly tasked with pumping out 28 nm (and larger) wafers.

Jensen Huang on Switch 2's Custom NVIDIA SoC: "Unlike Anything We've Ever Built Before"

Nintendo's Switch 2 hybrid console is due to arrive at retail tomorrow (June 5), and pre-launch marketing campaigns are in full swing. The Japanese gaming giant has called in a high profile partner—Jensen Huang—to add some surprisingly technical heft during hype festivities. At this stage in time, NVIDIA's Tegra "T239" chipset is a well known quantity—thanks to years of leaked "internal info," and disabled examples turning up for close analysis in China. Industry experts did not anticipate Nintendo's fairly frank discussions that covered Switch 2's hardware capabilities. The Nintendo "Creator's Voice" video series has featured a number of high-profile third-party software development buddies (including CD Projekt RED), but yesterday's Team Green CEO contribution received widespread press attention.

Jensen paid tribute to Satoru Iwata, a former and much missed Nintendo president. Their collaboration started during the era of OG Switch development: "he wanted to create something no one had seen before. A console powerful enough for big, cinematic games—but small enough to take anywhere. It sounded impossible. But that vision became the original Nintendo Switch. We lost Iwata-san before the launch, but his clarity, his purpose, it still inspires our work every day. Together, we poured everything into that system." As mentioned back in April, NVIDIA dedicated significant resources into making their latest "technical marvel."

Best Buy Briefly Lists Seagate 4 TB Xbox Storage Expansion Card - "Discounted" Price: $430

Yesterday, keen trackers of brand-new Xbox accessories stumbled upon the first-ever 4 TB Storage Expansion Card—courtesy of Seagate. Prior to a fresh discovery of the (now inactive) listing on Best Buy, Xbox Series X|S owners were only able to select 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB options (produced by Seagate and WD). Since launching back in 2020, Microsoft's proprietary SDD design remains a controversial prospect—mostly due to high prices, associated with the utilization of a CFExpress standard. In comparison, Sony's rival current-gen consoles—the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro—can be user upgraded with relatively reasonably-priced standard-sized internal M.2 SSDs (depending on specs). The Xbox Series Expansion Card requires less "tech expertise," since it is simply inserted into a special rear port.

Before the scrubbing of Best Buy's prematurely published product page, gaming news outlets focused on a $429.99 cost of ownership. It is unclear whether eager customers have secured first batches of stock, but Microsoft and Seagate (its official storage provider partner) have not issued any press material regarding the leaked 4 TB flagship model. Curiously, Best Buy's brief sale included a special launch discount. According to screen captures, the normal MSRP would be $499.99. Seagate's 2 TB SKU is currently on offer: $219.99 (instead of $259.99), while the WD BLACK C50 2 TB card sports a full price tag of $299.99. Naturally, better value is offered by (USB-connected) external solutions. As of early 2025, hardcore storage enthusiasts can link up 16+ TB storage devices to Microsoft's Xbox Series X and S machines. Industry experts believe that Seagate's 4 TB Storage Expansion Card will be introduced during this weekend's (Sunday, June 8) Xbox Games Showcase.

People Can Fly Suspends Development of "Gemini" & "Bifrost" Projects

Today (June 1) we made a very difficult decision to suspend the development of project Gemini and project Bifrost—the relevant current reports have been released to the market. The suspension of the Gemini project is a consequence of the fact that the Publisher has not presented us with a draft of the subsequent content rider to the Publishing Agreement covering the terms and conditions of further milestones on project Gemini and the lack of communication from the Publisher as to its willingness to continue or terminate the Gemini project.

Project Bifrost was suspended due to the above and the analysis of the Group's cash flow, which showed a lack of prospects for securing organizational resources and funds necessary to continue the production and release of this project. As a result, we have to significantly regroup as a studio and scale down our teams, which hurts the most. We wish to express our deepest regret and sadness over how these events have unfolded and our sincere gratitude for everyone's contribution up to this point.

OpenAI Sets its "Democratic AI" Sights on Countries Outside of North America

Our Stargate project, an unprecedented investment in America's AI infrastructure announced in January with President Trump and our partners Oracle and SoftBank, is now underway with our first supercomputing campus in Abilene, Texas, and more sites to come. We've heard from many countries asking for help in building out similar AI infrastructure—that they want their own Stargates and similar projects. It's clear to everyone now that this kind of infrastructure is going to be the backbone of future economic growth and national development. Technological innovation has always driven growth by helping people do more than they otherwise could—AI will scale human ingenuity itself and drive more prosperity by scaling our freedoms to learn, think, create and produce all at once.

We want to help these countries, and in the process, spread democratic AI, which means the development, use and deployment of AI that protects and incorporates long-standing democratic principles. Examples of this include the freedom for people to choose how they work with and direct AI, the prevention of government use of AI to amass control, and a free market that ensures free competition. All these things contribute to broad distribution of the benefits of AI, discourage the concentration of power, and help advance our mission. Likewise, we believe that partnering closely with the US government is the best way to advance democratic AI.
